The weekend is just around the corner, so I think it's time to celebrate with the world's easiest cocktail! This delicious cocktail contains just 3 simple ingredients. In place of the traditional ginger beer, I use ginger kombucha. This didn't taste distinctly like kombucha to me, but I drink kombucha daily, so perhaps I'm not the best person to ask.
You may be wondering what on earth kombucha is, why I would drink it daily, and why you'd ever put it in a cocktail. Well, kombucha is fermented tea. Tea is brewed with sugar, then you add an alien-looking SCOBY (symbiotic colony of yeast and bacteria) that eats up the sugar and ferments the tea. The first time I tried it (way back in 2007 or 2008), I was not.a.fan. That was during the "eat-whatever-you-want" portion of my life. It was supposed to cure cancer, but it tasted more to me like it might give it to you. Trust me when I say, if you're expecting anything tea-like, do not drink kombucha. The fermentation renders the tea fizzy, tangy, and a little funky.
There are many reasons to drink kombucha. The main reason I do is because it is probiotic. Many natural forms of probiotics contain dairy, which I can't eat. But my digestion needs all the help it can get! So I love to drink kombucha as a way to get probiotics as well as B vitamins. It may be an acquired taste, but now I love it. Aaaaand, I've gotten both my mom and husband hooked, and they were once staunch haters. Haters. So I think you should give it a try.
Now back to this drink. By using ginger kombucha instead of ginger beer, we can drastically cut down on sugar, plus add some nutritional benefits that are usually lacking in sugary cocktails. There are no sweeteners added, but this drink goes down easy and still has the normal zesty ginger and tangy lime. It's perfect for kicking back this weekend, or for your next gathering. I used GT's brand Gingerade kombucha, but any brand will do.
1c ginger kombucha
1/2 oz. lime juice
1 1/2 oz. vodka
- Fill a copper mug or other glass with ice cubes
- Stir together the kombucha, lime juice, and vodka and pour it over ice. Be sure not to stir too much or you're take the carbonation out of the kombucha.
