I'm a ranch dressing girl. Trashy as it may be, it's my favorite salad dressing, and I'm not above dipping other things in it either. When I first cut out dairy from my diet, I was so sad to kiss my beloved ranch goodbye. Salads were no longer worth eating.
Years later I switched my diet to a more paleo-style template and discovered the joys of homemade mayonnaise. I also found a plethora of dairy-free ranch dressing recipes. I tried a few of them, but most of them used coconut milk instead of the traditional buttermilk. I have one word for that: bleeeeech. No matter what else was in it, all I could taste was the coconut milk. No ma'am. Coconut milk does not go with savory salad dressing, not in my book.
So I had to come up with my own recipe. This one is coconut milk-free *praise hands emoji* and it is so delicious. It's way better than that crap in the bottle, I promise. It definitely passes as "the real thing" and anyone you feed it to will happily gobble it down without realizing it's dairy-free. And once you buy (or grow if you're really amazing) some fresh herbs, you'll be in business to make tons of batches of this yummy dressing, for all your salad and dipping needs.
Here's my fresh herb tip: Nobody wants to go buy bunches of herbs every time you make dressing, right? I buy 1 bunch each of parsley and dill, then chop it all up as if I were going to use it. I use what I need, then I put the rest in small plastic bags and throw it in the freezer. Next time I need some ranch, I just pull out the baggies, measure what I need, and put them back in the freezer. Easy! and this will save you some $$ and creates less food waste, which is always good!
Dairy-Free Ranch Dressing
1 batch Easiest Mayo
2T fresh parsley, chopped
2T fresh dill, chopped
1t apple cider vinegar
10 cranks fresh cracked pepper
1/4t garlic powder
2T filtered water (optional)
- Into the mayonnaise jar, add all of the other ingredients. Stir or shake until everything is well combined.
- For best flavor, let this sit together for an hour or more before you eat it.
Hint: if you want a ranch dip rather than a salad dressing, skip the filtered water.
